Who started Culinary Discoveries? Jose Antonio (Tony) and Lisa Sierra, partners in life and everything Spanish. Tony and Lisa love nothing more than preparing and enjoying a good meal surrounded by friends and family. Tony is passionate about his native Spanish food and culture and since moving to the USA in 1983, has shared this passion with everyone he meets. He is a native of the historic city of Burgos, head of Castilla. His interest in the kitchen started when he was a child, "As cliche as it may sound, I owe my love of cooking and any talent I have in the kitchen to my mother. Ever since I was a kid, she couldn't keep me out of the kitchen. I was always lifting lids on the pots, tasting whatever was on the stove. I guess you could say that my interest in cooking really started because of my love of eating! Like most Spanish families, whenever there was a family gathering my mother and her sisters would spend the day in the kitchen talking, laughing and generally having a blast while they cooked. Cooking is at the heart of ANY celebration in Spain." After spending more than 25 years in the restaurant business, he knew what he loved the best was to being able to share his culture, and its' food and wine with others. He would tell anyone willing to listen about the wonders of Spanish cuisine, the excitement in Spanish festivals and the relaxed nature of the Spanish people. One day he and Lisa decided to turn their passion into Culinary Discoveries and share the delights of Spanish cuisine and culture with small, intimate groups of people like you - people who appreciate good cooking or just love to eat! Tony and Lisa can't stay out of the kitchen, so if you live in the Sacramento area, you might catch up with them at Shallot's cooking school in Vacaville, where they teach cooking classes for Spanish meals. Tony's wife and partner, Lisa shares his passion for everything Spanish. A native of California, Lisa made her first trip to Spain as a high school exchange student in the 1970's. From that first summer, she fell in love with Spain... and Tony! Attracted by the warm and fun-loving people, the Mediterranean climate and the flavorful and abundant food, she set her heart on living in Spain. Lisa misses the casual Spanish lifestyle and enjoys leading tours with Tony whenever she can. With a Masters in Spanish, Lisa has a deep knowledge of the culture and history of Spain and is fluent in Spanish. She currently teaches Spanish in the Sacramento area. Lisa is always at Tony's side in the kitchen as well as on tours. She has a big sweet tooth, so is in charge of preparing the desserts during their cooking classes at Shallot's.
